NEW TRAVEL MINDSET

Thinking ahead

By Jason Jourdan

A new mindset is upon us as consumers turn their attention toward travel once more. Global trends indicate increased travel planning as vacationers focus on destinations away from home offices and remote learning. The latest findings of the ongoing consumer sentiment study by Longwoods International reveals Americans are planning trips at the highest levels since the onset of the pandemic.

After a year dominated by COVID-19, consumer preferences have changed. Travelers want to take their offices on the road internationally. Venues that are minimizing the risks of infection by restricting large group gatherings are benefitting from an increase in the demand for clean and private amenities. These protocols redefine the concept of luxury travel with more emphasis placed on personalized experiences and the desire to travel with a purpose.

The American Express Travel: Global Travel Trends Report surveyed respondents across seven countries, including the United States, Australia, India, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The findings show travelers are ready to begin planning future trips with a greater sense of anticipation and purpose.

  • 87% indicate pent-up demand for travel
  • 56% are ready to book now
  • 78% believe travel key to health & wellness
  • 68% agree to increase sustainable travel
  • 61% will stay longer to make up for lost time in 2020
  • 63% plan to use travel rewards points
  • 65% say safety is a priority

Changes to the traveler’s mindset are fostering a return to something different. As travel resumes, vacationers can expect to face a few bumps in the road. Flexibility will become a traveler’s most important survival tool. COVID-19 measures will continue to impact travel as protocols like deep cleaning and mask mandates continue by federal order at least through May 11 of this year.

Even with vaccines, tourists need a COVID-19 test upon entering or exiting most countries. Fast and affordable testing locations will become more available, along with rapid testing kiosks. According to Forbes, many Airports and resorts are already integrating testing into their operational process.

Moving forward, travelers will need to be more health-conscious than ever before. Health and treatment options will become important considerations when selecting a vacation destination. For some, this will mean purchasing international travel medical insurance.

The new travel mindset requires travelers to choose their destinations more carefully, respect the environment and local government advisories, and include the coverage of international travel medical insurance. Point Comfort® provides benefits for a range of contingencies, including:
